Video: A Deep Dive into Bobcat’s L23 and L28 Small Articulated Loaders

In our latest Machine Heads interview, Wayne Grayson speaks with Katie Redenius of Bobcat to dive into the features, applications and evolution of the company’s small articulated loaders (SALs) — the Bobcat L23 and L28. These compact yet powerful machines fill a niche that traditional skid steers and compact wheel loaders can’t always address, offering a lightweight footprint, impressive lift capacity and maneuverability in tight spaces. Let’s dig in.

Meet the Bobcat L23 and L28 Small Articulated Loaders

Bobcat’s L23 and L28 were unveiled at CONEXPO-CON/AGG 2020 as a response to the increasing demand for compact machines capable of handling delicate surfaces. Both loaders are under 50 in. wide, making them excellent for applications like sidewalk snow removal and landscape work in confined areas.

  • L23: With a fixed lift arm, the L23 is ideal for precise material handling in tight spots like backyards and narrow lots. It boasts a rated operating capacity (ROC) of 1,395 lbs and a lift height of 85.4 in.
  • L28: The L28 adds versatility with its telescoping lift arm, capable of extending to over 8.5 ft. It offers a slightly higher ROC of 1,534 lbs and excels at lifting materials into trailers or over obstacles.

Both models feature Bobcat’s Bob-Tach attachment system, supporting over 30 attachments, from grapples to snowblowers. Auxiliary hydraulics expand their utility, making these machines a versatile option across multiple industries.

Why SALs?

Small articulated loaders provide a unique alternative to skid steers and compact wheel loaders, especially for tasks requiring low ground disturbance and tight maneuvering.

  • Minimal Ground Disturbance: The articulation joint allows for tight turns without tearing up turf. Brands like Bobcat even offer a “turf-safe” mode that further reduces surface damage.
  • Compact and Transportable: Their small size and lightweight design make SALs easy to transport and ideal for confined workspaces.
  • Precision and Comfort: Steering wheels and travel pedals make these machines intuitive for new operators. Optional heated cabs add comfort for year-round use.

Comparing SALs to Skid Steers and Compact Wheel Loaders

While skid steers and compact wheel loaders dominate the American market, SALs carve out their niche in specific applications:

  • Landscaping: SALs excel in landscaping tasks, thanks to their light footprint and ability to navigate delicate terrain.
  • Snow Removal: Their compact size and ability to operate in narrow spaces make SALs an excellent choice for clearing sidewalks and parking lots.
  • Tree Care and Agriculture: SALs have great lifting power for their size. Attachments like log grapples and pallet forks enable SALs to handle heavy tree care and agricultural work efficiently.

Key Features on the Bobcat L23 and L28 Small Articulated Loaders

  • Telescoping Lift Arm (L28): The L28’s telescoping lift arm offers extra reach and load-leveling capabilities for versatile material handling.
  • Articulated Steering: Both models feature a tight-turning articulation joint, allowing operators to maneuver in confined areas with ease.
  • Turf and Traction Modes: The machines automatically switch between modes for optimal ground control and minimal disturbance.

Attachments Enhance Versatility

Bobcat Log Grapple

With over 30 compatible attachments, Bobcat’s SALs are a multi-tool for construction, landscaping and agriculture. Popular attachments include:

  • Snowblowers: Perfect for clearing snow from sidewalks and small lots.
  • Pallet Forks: Ideal for moving bagged or palletized materials.
  • Log Grapples: Useful for forestry and tree care applications.

The Business Case for SALs

For contractors, SALs offer a compelling mix of cost-efficiency, versatility and ease of use. They’re especially appealing in rental markets, where their compact size and intuitive controls make them accessible to operators of all experience levels.
