JCB, known for its cool compact equipment and military construction division, recently celebrated a major milestone: the production of its 1,000th Light Capability Rough Terrain Forklift (LCRTF). This rugged machine is a testament to JCB’s expertise in creating reliable, military-grade construction equipment. As a leading name in the iron industry, JCB continues to push boundaries, producing versatile machines like the LCRTF and the High-Mobility Engineer Excavator Type I (HMEE-I), which I had the privilege of operating way back in the day, reaching speeds of up to 60 mph. It was gnarly. This article briefly delves into JCB’s military innovations and the role of construction equipment in critical defense operations.

JCB’s Light Capability Rough Terrain Forklift (LCRTF)

First off, let’s extend a big congrats to JCB. The LCRTF is a very cool telehandler. This unit combines over 90 percent commercial-grade components with 10 percent military-specific modifications, making it highly adaptable for challenging applications. Designed to support the U.S. Army, it excels in tasks such as clearing landing zones, loading combat vehicles and transporting ISO containers. From the press release:

“The LCRTF demonstrates how a robust commercial machine can excel in supporting missions in the most demanding military environments,” said Chris Giorgianni, vice president of government & defense at JCB. “If it’s tough enough for the U.S. Army, it’s tough enough for your jobsite or farm. This milestone is a testament to JCB’s engineering expertise and our ability to meet diverse customer needs.”

The United States Army awarded JCB a 10-year contract in December 2016 to produce the LCRTF, with full-scale production beginning in late 2019. JCB’s telescopic forklift is currently exclusive to the U.S. Army and has been instrumental in military logistics, including clearing supplies and equipment from landing zones and loading operations.

Key Features and Specs

  • Lifting Capacity: Maximum lift capacity of more than 5,000 lbs (2.26 metric tons) and a lift height of 19 ft (5.8 meters).
  • Mobility: Four-wheel drive and steering ensure agility in tough terrains. It has a travel speed of 20 mph.
  • Transportability: Can be underslung from a CH-47 Chinook or fit inside a C-130 Hercules.
  • Durability: Can be outfitted to operate in extreme conditions, withstanding temperatures from -40°C to 49°C and wading up to 75 cm in water. Watch it go through water in that video above. It’s badass.
  • Maintenance: Easy access to parts via JCB’s global network.

These features ensure the LCRTF delivers consistent performance in the field, whether on a battlefield, jobsite or farm.

“Whether supporting missions in the field or projects at home, the LCRTF proves that it can tackle any task with ease and reliability,” Giorgianni added.

JCB’s Role in Military Construction Equipment

JCB has long been a trusted partner for military operations. From forklifts to backhoes, its machines play a crucial role in logistics, engineering and defense applications. By combining commercial technology with military-grade modifications, JCB ensures its equipment meets the rigorous demands of the battlefield. With over 10 percent of its North American workforce comprising veterans, JCB actively supports the military through hiring initiatives and community partnerships. This commitment extends beyond equipment, fostering a culture of innovation and resilience.

We’ll also take this moment to honor JCB’s HMEE-I. Capable of reaching speeds up to 60 mph, it combines the power of a backhoe with the mobility of a military vehicle. Its versatility makes it invaluable for road clearing, obstacle creation and power line installation.

Key Highlights

  • Speed: Achieves high road speeds in two-wheel and four-wheel drive modes.
  • Protection: Offers ballistic and blast protection with modular armor options.
  • Mobility: Features independent hydraulic suspension, ABS braking and crab steering for cross-country maneuverability.
  • Transportability: Fits inside a C-130 or larger aircraft for rapid deployment.
  • Fuel: Designed to run on standard commercial diesel fuel as well as kerosene-based fuels such as JP8 and NATO F34.

Why Military-Grade Equipment Matters

Construction equipment like the LCRTF and HMEE-I is vital for both military and civilian use. These machines handle logistics, infrastructure development and disaster relief with unmatched efficiency. Their durability and adaptability make them indispensable tools in diverse scenarios. JCB’s milestone of 1,000 LCRTF units underscores its leadership in military and construction equipment. From the battlefield to the worksite, JCB’s machines deliver impressive performance, ensuring mission success. The 1,000th machine, purchased by the U.S. Army, will soon ship out for deployment in the field. From the press release:

“As we celebrate this achievement, we’re reminded of the countless people — military and civilian — who rely on our machines every day,” Giorgianni concluded.

With a focus on innovation, durability and community support, JCB continues to set a high standard for the industry. For more on JCB’s military and construction equipment, visit JCB’s website.
