CE Snags Two More Awards, Including Best Single Issue for Our July/August Print Magazine
The Construction Media Alliance (CMA) will always hold a special place in my heart. The organization, which celebrates both the trade media and marketing firms serving the construction industry, was one of the first to honor Compact Equipment with an award — my Editor at Large column — which once again picked up a CMA award at The Utility Expo a few weeks back (a big tradeshow held in Louisville every two years focused on the utility construction industry). Of course it was the other CMA award that has the CE crew proudly bragging to anyone who will listen, including you! Compact Equipment won Best Single Issue for our recent July/August print magazine. This is the first time we’ve won for an entire issue!

These two new accolades bring our awards count to 13 wins in five years, which is an average of 2.5 awards a year. These latest medals come off CE winning a national gold Azbee last year for best how-to article in America (focused on mini excavators). Big congrats to the Compact Equipment team, including managing editor Pam Kleineke and graphic designer Sarah Haughawout. Here’s a quote from the press release:
The entrants for the 2023 awards program were notable for a desire to embrace serious and weighty topics related to the construction industry — all able to deliver it in a compelling way within the world of heavy industry in North America,” says Bill Elverman, executive director of the Construction Media Alliance and co-owner of PKA | True North. “Each winner was judged for excellence by a panel of peers who have worked in various disciplines of marketing and journalism in the construction industry — weighing each an understanding of the industry and its people, as well as overall skill in communications.
Compact Equipment’s recent July/August 2023 print issue is an outstanding example of the high-quality trade journalism and graphic design found at Benjamin Media’s top construction equipment pub. It’s also a great showcase of how industry partnerships can create important editorial for the trades. This 68-page book is CE’s big technology issue focused on all the emerging tech in the off-highway construction equipment industry, pulling together think-pieces on electric equipment (page 20), grade control (page 34), comfort and automation (page 42), virtual reality (page 52), artificial intelligence (page 54), hydrogen engines and fuel cells (page 56) and telematics (page 60).
These think-pieces (highlighted with that Top Tech banner) are then accompanied by excellent deep dive features into corresponding subjects. “Saving Green” on page 24 is the best article ever written on federal and state incentives for electric equipment. “3D, Please” on page 38 is easily one of the most comprehensive stories ever written on 3D machine control systems for compact track loaders. All of this is married with great departmental copy, including our Editor at Large features in the News department (photo above), which have earned three different awards. Everything from the Publisher’s Message (the front of the magazine) to Talking Shop (the back of the magazine) is engaging content. The look of this July/August issue of Compact Equipment is also award-winning. That beautiful cover. That opening spread in the News (page 8). Those awesome in-house created graphics on pages 24-25.
We’re super proud to be honored once again by the Construction Media Alliance. The awards program was sponsored by Hyundai Construction Equipment and a special ceremony announcing the recipients was sponsored by Hyundai and the Association of Equipment Manufacturers at Utility Expo 2023. Looking ahead to next year, we’re already preparing industry-leading editorial and graphic design to win our 2.5 awards in 2024. Until then, enjoy these Editor at Large posts that won us a CMA in 2023!
