Caterpillar Inc. has expanded its workforce development commitment to North Carolina, allocating $10 million of its five-year, $100 million Building the Future Workforce Initiative.

The new funding aims to prepare current and future construction equipment industry workers for modern manufacturing across North Carolina. Additionally, the $10 million allocation will focus on industry technician roles in the equipment sector’s ever evolving manufacturing floor.

As of 2026, Caterpillar employs more than 3,600 people across North Carolina, boasting a strong dealership network in the Tar Heel State. With 325 suppliers in the state, the company says that investing in people and education in the Mid-Atlantic region is a crucial step in bringing Caterpillar into the future.

“Investing in people is essential to building the workforce advanced manufacturing will need for the future,” says Christy Pambianchi, Caterpillar’s chief human resources officer. “North Carolina’s growth creates an opportunity to help more people build the skills they need for careers in manufacturing and strengthen the workforce that will support the industry for years to come.”

A natural fit

Caterpillar officials say North Carolina is a “critical manufacturing hub” for its North American operations. When it comes to the $10 million funding allocation, the Irving, Texas-based equipment giant says North Carolina is a perfect fit.

Caterpillar has also recently announced plans to invest approximately $1 billion in North Carolina’s manufacturing scene, expanding capacity for products to support its growing Cat Compact business sector. The business unit provides compact equipment for small contractors and growing businesses around the U.S.

“North Carolina is home to the largest manufacturing workforce in the Southeast, and Caterpillar recognizes what our state brings to the table,” says North Carolina Gov. Josh Stein. “I thank Caterpillar for its long-standing partnership and look forward to more economic opportunity coming to Sanford.”

Bringing Caterpillar along in North Carolina

Much of the investment will cover plans for a new modern manufacturing facility in Sanford, company representatives say. The new plant is “designed to increase production of compact track loaders and telehandlers to meet customer demand,” and supports the Cat Compact approach.

Additionally, the $10 million allocation will go toward Caterpillar’s Clayton, North Carolina facility, which manufactures small wheel loaders and supports the distribution of backhoe loaders. The firm says these operations, alongside the Sanford site, aim to advance “manufacturing excellence,” as well as innovation, workforce development, and economic growth.

This $10 million in funding marks the sixth allocation for the Building the Future Workforce Initiative, Caterpillar says. The Texan firm has already contributed to manufacturing industrial development in Indiana, Texas, Illinois, Arkansas, and a global “Workforce Innovation Challenge.”
