The Top 3- to 4-Metric-Ton Mini Excavators on the Market

Welcome to Compact Equipment‘s weekly showcase column. This week we’ll be looking at 3- to 4-metric-ton mini excavators, a category that’s become a favorite among contractors, landscapers and rental fleets alike. These machines offer the perfect balance of power and versatility, providing just enough capacity for tougher tasks while still being small enough for tight jobsites. With more than 20 brands in the market, ranging from Kubota to New Holland Construction, there’s no shortage of options for operators looking for reliable, high-performance equipment.
This size class, specifically 3 to 4 metric tons, is the most popular among mini excavators in North America. Contractors love them for their ability to tackle a wide range of projects, from digging trenches to moving materials, all while being compact enough to maneuver in confined spaces. With hydraulic systems capable of handling a variety of attachments, these machines are equally adept at lifting, digging or even clearing brush with tools like grapples and augers.
Whether you’re looking to purchase or rent, a few considerations can make or break your decision. Think about the reach, dig depth and weight of the machine, as well as auxiliary hydraulic flow if you plan to use attachments. For tight spaces, zero tail swing models are often the best choice. Plus, don’t forget to consider comfort and ease of operation, with many models offering advanced cab features like air conditioning and ergonomic controls.
As we explore the top models from leading manufacturers, this showcase will give you the insights you need to make an informed decision on your next 3- to 4-metric-ton mini excavator. Let’s dive into the details!

Mini Excavator Purchasing Considerations
Mini excavators can help make short work of many tasks, whether for utility work, site prep or landscaping, just to name a few. If you’re in the market for a new mini excavator, it’s important to think through all the available options before settling on a particular manufacturer or model.
Applications. Consider how you’ll be using your machine, now and in the future. While mini excavators have commonly been used for digging, they’re now being treated more like a multitool. Owners and operators are finding ways to do a broader range of jobs smarter and more efficiently by using the many attachment options available today.
Size/Weight. For contractors who are primarily doing smaller-scale jobs, a machine from 3-4t may be adequate due to space limitations. Those who work in larger residential areas or perform commercial work may want to consider a larger machine with more working range and capability.
Comfort. A comfortable operator is a productive operator. Consider the size of the operator’s station, how it is appointed and designed. If you know you’ll be working in your mini excavator all year round, you may want to invest in a cab unit with heat and air conditioning.
Safety Features. Finally, ensure your machine is outfitted with the proper safety features based on how you’ll be using it. For example, if you’re going to equip your mini ex with a breaker or a mulcher, a cab model would provide you with greater protection than a canopy. The same would apply if using a mower or mulcher. Front window guards and Level II OPG protection can protect you from falling debris. A rearview camera might be helpful when working in congested areas with more foot or vehicular traffic.
