Texas-based equipment giant Caterpillar has announced a collaborative agreement with FieldAI, in a bid to advance physical AI, autonomy, and robotics in jobsites and factories across the U.S.

Announced Sept. 2, the partnership aims to leverage robotics, digital twins, and NVIDIA technologies to create safer, smarter, and more productive operations teams. The companies are focusing on turning data-based observations into “actionable insights,” and will use physical AI to improve decision-making for both workers and machines.

“The future of our industries will be shaped by how effectively we combine human expertise with AI-powered machines,” says Jaime Mineart, Caterpillar’s CTO. “Collaborations like this help accelerate the journey. We’re focused on applying AI where it matters most, helping customers improve safety, increase productivity and get more value from every operation.”

The deal comes as an extension of Caterpillar’s vision of a “jobsite of the future,” officials say, which includes safer, productive, and easier-to-run operations than ever before. The firm envisions that all of this will draw power from intelligent machines, and will weave in connected workflows and digital insights.

Early stage applications

Caterpillar representatives say the company chose FieldAI for “its proven ability to deploy in complex, dynamic industrial environments where traditional automation often falls short.” The company’s autonomy and foundation models have already proven critical in a few early applications, including autonomous robotic inspections, jobsite-wide digital twins, and operational optimization with AI systems.

“Caterpillar has shaped operations on jobsites and manufacturing facilities for over a century, and these are exactly the environments FieldAI excels in, with deployments spanning hundreds of sites worldwide,” says Ali Agha, founder and CEO of FieldAI. “This collaboration brings leading physical AI capabilities to a leading manufacturer of construction and mining equipment. Together, we are shaping the next century of AI-enabled heavy industry.”

The collaborative deal aims to intertwine Caterpillar’s industry expertise and operational data, with FieldAI’s robotic foundational models. The companies say they believe this shared foundation will accelerate practical solutions for Caterpillar customers, improving both productivity and safety.

The firms have already begun advancing AI-powered autonomy to help customers through NVIDIA’s accelerated computing strengths. Officials say the company’s Omniverse AI simulation technology improves sitewide visibility, as well as supporting the next generation of industrial operations.

“Modern manufacturing at Caterpillar is transforming how we work, from design to delivery, through advanced technology, digital innovation and a culture of continuous improvement,” says John Tuntland, Caterpillar’s SVP of the Integrated Components Division. “These technologies give our teams greater visibility into how our facilities operate and help us identify opportunities to improve safety, optimize flow and make more informed decisions.

“As our people embrace new ways of working, we are building manufacturing operations that respond faster to change and perform at their best.”
