Caterpillar Extends Partnership with University of Illinois Athletics

The University of Illinois Division of Intercollegiate Athletics (DIA) has unveiled an on-field sponsorship with construction equipment titan Caterpillar Inc., the school announced Aug. 26.
The partnership will display the Caterpillar logo on the 25-yard lines at the school’s college football arena, Gies Memorial Stadium. Facilitated by sports marketing firm Learfield, the multi-year agreement brings together two “iconic brands” from the Prairie State, school officials say.
Josh Whitman, the university’s director of athletics, says the partnership is a great opportunity to work with a company that has a “long and storied connection” with the Land of Lincoln. The sponsorship marks the first on-field logo of any kind at the stadium’s Zuppke Field, he adds.
“As we expand our sponsorship portfolio to meet the opportunities presented by the rapidly evolving landscape of college athletics, it is important that we find partners with shared history and common values,” Whitman says. “Both Fighting Illini Athletics and Caterpillar have a proud legacy and respected reputation in the state of Illinois, and we are each experiencing sustained growth and success. I want to thank Caterpillar for their collaboration, and we look forward to building our relationship in the years ahead.”
The on-field logo placement “combines premium visibility with an authentic connection” to the state of Illinois, the university adds. The sponsorship will be a boon to Caterpillar’s brand visibility through in-stadium assets, including awarding the brand as the presenting sponsor of gameday statistics at the stadium.
“Caterpillar has been a staple in communities across Illinois for more than a century, and we’re thrilled to see them enhance their commitment to the state through its flagship institution and fantastic Illini student-athletes,” says Kim Damron, President of Sports Properties at Learfield.
Committing to the Midwest
Outside of painting a logo onto the university’s field, Caterpillar has been doing work to spark visibility, interest, and long-term careers in its home region. The equipment giant made a $10 million allocation of funds to the state of Illinois through its Building the Future Workforce Initiative earlier this year.
“Caterpillar’s roots in Illinois run deep, and this sponsorship strengthens our connection to the people and communities that have helped shape our success,” says Caterpillar chairman and CEO Joe Creed. “Illinois Athletics provides a powerful platform to engage students, alumni, customers and fans while showcasing the spirit of innovation, excellence and teamwork our organizations share. It also helps us inspire the next generation of talent who will help solve our customers’ toughest challenges.”
The company also committed money to the state’s eastern neighbor, Indiana, in the form of $5 million earlier this year, as well as a $725 million capital expansion to its Lafayette, Indiana facility.
As of 2026, the company employs more than 17,000 workers across Illinois, Caterpillar representatives say. The company has been a key player in the state’s employment numbers for more than a century, and the latest strides in commitment to the region aim to bolster that number for years to come, officials add.
