Innovative Iron Award Winner: Sullair’s E1035H Electric Portable Air Compressor
The Top Construction Landscape and Rental Equipment Launched in 2023
The world of off-highway machinery is evolving — battery-powered units, hydrogen engines, luxury and economy tiering, machine control automation — but maybe the biggest evolution is that everyone wants a compact machine. Small, tool-carrying construction equipment now make up about 50 percent of the U.S. machinery market with mini excavators and compact track loaders being the two most popular categories in America. To meet this enormous demand, machine makers released some pretty awesome machines in the past 12 months: advanced skid steers, electric asphalt pavers, entry-level grade control attachments and so much more. The 2023 Innovative Iron Awards celebrate the best of these compact equipment launches. Scouring tradeshows, visiting manufacturers, operating units, interviewing experts, this annual compilation represents the best equipment we’ve seen and experienced all year, including…
Sullair’s E1035H Electric Portable Air Compressor
Going electric doesn’t mean sacrificing power, performance or anything really. When done well, electrification means an enhancement of operations. As an example, let’s take the Sullair E1035H electric portable air compressor (a 2023 Innovative Iron Award winner). This e-unit is designed to provide lower total cost of ownership and quieter operation (compared to diesel-operated compressors) while delivering 1,035 cfm of airflow at 150 psi (the same power as similar diesel compressors). The electric compressor features loads of awesome tech to make it happen. The E1035H is equipped with AirLinx — the Sullair GPS and remote monitoring platform. The unit features industry-first, patent-pending swing-out coolers designed to help simplify service and maintenance. This unit also includes Sullair’s famous airends with the revolutionary, Sullair-exclusive Electronic Spiral Valve (ESV) tech, saving customers energy during operation.
“The development of the E1035H is the beginning of a new era for Sullair in driving industry-leading solutions that bring enormous value to our customers while promoting environmentally responsible innovations,” said John Randall, president and CEO of Sullair, in the press release. “The future of our industry — and our planet — depends on all of our commitment to investments in green technology. Our customers are expecting that commitment, and we are proud to play our part in the fight against climate change.”
Let’s start with the heart of every Sullair compressor — that airend. Sullair’s E1035H electric portable air compressor uses the legendary Sullair airend matched with the Sullair-exclusive ESV technology that uses variable capacity to help match output to demand — saving customers energy during operation. Unlike other capacity control options, ESV is not impacted by dirty environments or altitude, making it an exceptional choice for this type of compressor.
Overall, the Sullair E1035H electric portable air compressor is designed to provide lower total cost of ownership. Operational cost savings may be realized in the lower cost of electricity to power the unit versus diesel fuel and diesel re-fueling costs. Additionally, because there is no diesel engine, service and maintenance are simplified, and in many areas of the country, efficiency credits may be available. The E1035H features industry first, patent-pending swing-out coolers designed to help simplify service and maintenance. With portable compressors, dirty coolers can lead to reduced performance quickly. The E1035H swing-out coolers make cooler cleaning simple and complete — helping the unit continue to operate at peak performance. The E1035H also runs exclusively on Sullube, a biodegradable, varnish-removing lubricant expertly engineered by Sullair for optimized performance and maximum efficiency.
The E1035H focuses on customer safety and useability as well, with improved safety features, a color touchscreen controller, superior maneuverability and easy service and maintenance access — all in a rugged design ready to work indoors or in the dirtiest, harshest environments.

The emissions-free design of the E1035H electric air compressor means greater flexibility between outdoor and indoor applications wherever an adequate power source is available. The E1035H is suitable for a wide variety of applications from mining, utilities, construction, backup air and more. And, because the E1035H is quieter to operate than typical diesel air compressors, it can be used longer and during off hours.
The initial development of the E1035H was actually driven by hands-on input and involvement from a Sullair customer — Ring Power Corporation.
“To stay competitive, it is important for manufacturers to listen to customer feedback, adapt and innovate,” said Roger Adkins, vice president and compressed air business manager at Ring Power Corporation, in the press release. “Ring Power was excited to work closely with Sullair in the development of this new electric rental compressor that meets our customers’ needs. The Sullair E1035H is a promising addition to their product lineup with versatility and functionality that customers will appreciate. It’s wonderful to see Sullair investing in new technology and products that will transform the compressed air industry.”
The E1035H aligns with Hitachi’s (Sullair’s parent company’s) long-term environmental targets titled Hitachi Environmental Innovation 2050. The Hitachi Group has set a target of becoming carbon neutral in all its global factories and offices by fiscal 2030 and achieving carbon neutrality throughout its entire value chain by fiscal 2050. The E1035H electric is a big step in the right direction. For more info, visit sullair.com.
