Innovative Iron Awards: Perkins 1200 Series Diesel Engines
The heart and soul of a good company is the creativity it brings to a marketplace. Innovation (as we’ll call it) is both the knowledge a business bestows to an industry and also the imagination in which it approaches its products and customers. In many ways, 2014 has been a tough year for contractors and manufacturers, so now it seems like an appropriate time to celebrate some of the big success stories — contractors who have become leaner and more agile, companies that have diversified and gained market share and manufacturers who have kept trailblazing with ever more efficient and innovative equipment. With this article we salute the companies (from Cat to Kubota) that have changed the commercial equipment market over the last 12 months with their unique, interesting and innovative machines, engines and technologies.
Perkins 1200 Series Diesel Engines
Perkins 1200 Series offers a number of impressive benefits for compact machinery OEMs. For those wanting a lot of torque at low speed, the single turbo Perkins 1206F-E70TA is a seven-liter, six-cylinder unit capable of producing up to 202 hp at 2,200 rpm with maximum torque of 870 Nm at 1,400 rpm. Those wanting more power may want to move up to the next highest in the 1200 family. The twin turbo 1206F-E70TTA delivers 320 hp and gives OEMs who may previously have chosen a larger displacement engine the choice of the same power from a smaller engine package. It features twin turbochargers — one small, one large — mounted in series. Perkins minimized the impact of the after-treatment required to meet U.S. EPA Tier 4 Final in particular the significant reduction in NOx. Perkins achieved this through packaging the diesel oxidation catalyst/diesel particulate filter canister and the selective catalytic reduction system into one integrated module.
