What do gravity, China shops, a wood stacking board game and now sand castles have in common? If you said Caterpillar construction equipment, give yourself a pat on the back.

The innovative minds at Caterpillar took the Internet by storm with its Built For It Trials series on YouTube, which showcased just what its machinery and talented operators could do. Well the team is back with its fourth installment in the series “Sand Castle.”

For this video, the fine folks from Peoria, Illinois headed to Caminho Niemeyer square in Niterói, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil in October and the result was a work of art and a world record.   It’s also proof that with Caterpillar power and precision, you can build anything you imagine.

“Sand Castle” captures the action as two Cat hydraulic excavators, a wheel loader and two mini excavators transform 734 cubic meters (960 cubic yards) of sand into the world’s tallest sand castle.

Construction of the castle, which was made exclusively of quarry sand and water, began Oct. 28 and over the course of 15 days, trucks delivered 49 loads of sand to the site, where seven machine operators and seven sculptors carefully shifted and shaped it into a towering work of art.

By Nov. 11, construction was complete. A representative from Guinness World Records was on hand to take final measurements and confirmed that at 12.59 meters (41 feet, 3.67 inches), the Caterpillar sand castle was the new world record holder, topping the previous record of 11.63 meters (38 feet, 2 inches).
