GIE+EXPO Update: Louisville’s Cave Hill Cemetery Donates Tree for GIE+EXPO Education In-Tree Training

GIE+EXPO just announced that Cave Hill Cemetery and Arboretum will participate in this year’s tradeshow by working with The Davey Expert Tree Company and STIHL for the purpose of education. A tree from the cemetery’s property will be moved into the Kentucky Exposition Center’s Freedom Hall for in-tree climbing demonstrations. After a successful launch at GIE+EXPO 2019, Climb Trees, Expand Your Horizons, presented by the Women’s Tree Climbing Workshop, is back with an expanded lineup for 2020.
As an Active Cemetery, and a Level II Accredited Arboretum through The Morton Arboretum’s ArbNet Program, Cave Hill constantly monitors and cares for their canopy. Each year the cemetery’s team of ISA Certified Arborist and TRAQ (Tree Risk Assessment Qualification) credential holders identifies trees that have died, are in decline or pose a risk to persons or property. The trees are then removed and, whenever possible, replaced with healthy young trees.
“This process allows us to donate a tree that is scheduled to be removed,” said Gwen Mooney, President & CEO of Cave Hill Cemetery.”The Davey Expert Tree Company graciously helps with the removal and transport process. The tree slated for removal now gets to be used in an educational environment showing best management practices with an emphasis on safety. This is a great use for a tree that is scheduled to be removed and allows both the public and professionals a glimpse into the world of expert tree care.”
The facilities at the Kentucky Exposition Center offer the unique opportunity to offer the climbing demonstrations indoors. Freedom Hall’s ceiling height is over 60 feet and stadium-like seating, coupled with a Jumbotron video display, gives spectators an up-close view of the tree and climbers in action.
Eight in-tree demonstrations throughout the day Wednesday-Friday, October 21-23, will cover a wide range of topics, including tie-in points, the use of drones, fundamentals of pruning cuts and static vs dynamic rigging. These sessions are included with trade show registration.
New Workshops Offer CEUs
In addition to the in-tree demonstrations, two classroom workshops will offer Certified Arborists the opportunity earn CEUs at GIE+EXPO 2020.
- Wednesday, October 21, 10:00 AM – 1:00 PM: Gear Inspection for Tree Climbers
- Friday, October 23, 10:00 AM – 1:00 PM: Grow Your Green Business and Why?
The fee is $85/workshop, and registration is required. Each workshop is eligible for three (3) International Society of Arboriculture (ISA) continuing education credits (CEUs).
