New SIMA Safety 1st Courses Target Sidewalk and Snowplow Safety

The Snow & Ice Management Association (SIMA) has introduced two new training programs aimed at frontline winter maintenance crews. The Safety 1st Sidewalk Operator and Safety 1st Snowplow Operator courses provide structured education on safety and best practices for commercial contractors, municipalities and property managers. “SIMA is dedicated to providing resources for the snow and ice management industry to ensure safe, efficient operations during winter events,” says SIMA Executive Director Martin Tirado. “These courses are only one component to a larger safety program that companies can use to showcase their professionalism and safety to their clients and insurance providers.”

The Safety 1st program comes in two formats:

  • Online self-paced courses for individuals or teams
  • Classroom training using a trainer guide and group activities

Both formats cover the same core material. Lessons focus on critical safety topics such as:

  • Personal health and safety
  • Site safety
  • Chemical and yard safety
  • Driver and equipment safety
  • Pre-, in- and post-storm operations

The sidewalk course also includes training on shoveling tools, techniques and deicing practices. The plow course places added emphasis on equipment operation and driver awareness.
