Vermeer’s MTR516 Microtrencher Attachment Targets Clean, Efficient Fiber Installations

Vermeer is expanding its utility installation arsenal with the launch of the MTR516 microtrencher attachment. Designed to help contractors install fiber-optic cable quickly and with less surface disruption, the MTR516 delivers a precise trenching solution compatible with the Vermeer RTX550 and RTX750 ride-on tractors. From the press release:
“Contractors need to get fiber in the ground fast and keep the jobsite clean, and the MTR516 microtrencher is built for that,” said Nick Olsen, product manager at Vermeer. “We’ve packed it with features that directly impact cutting performance and jobsite cleanliness, all backed by the reliable service and support our customers expect from their local Vermeer dealer.”
Clean Cuts for Urban Fiber Work
Built for tight residential zones and congested infrastructure, the MTR516 cuts trenches up to 17 in. deep and 1 to 2 in. wide. Its fully shrouded cutting wheel contains debris and boosts vacuum suction for a cleaner trench and faster cleanup. The attachment minimizes surface impact, making it a strong fit for urban fiber rollout projects where restoration costs and property damage must be kept low. Vermeer engineered the MTR516 using lessons learned from its rockwheel line. It’s designed for long-term cutting performance even in tough ground conditions like cobble. The wheel options include:
- Polycrystalline diamond cutter (PDC) teeth for clean cuts in asphalt
- Rotary carbide teeth for work in concrete and rocky soils
The microtrencher can also be offset up to 24 in to the right, making curbside cuts easier.
Easy to Service in the Field
The MTR516 is designed with serviceability in mind. Crews can replace its bolt-in wear plates or switch out a spoil outlet for either 4-in or 6-in vac hoses. A dual-hinged access panel offers full blade access for maintenance or replacement. Other operator-friendly features include:
- Single-lever depth control
- Optimized spoil airflow across all cutting depths
Microtrenching helps contractors limit excavation and backfill when installing utilities like fiber or electrical conduit. The narrow trench left behind by the MTR516 reduces the volume of material displaced, allowing for faster job completion and less site restoration.
More from Vermeer: Utility and Fleet Tech Innovation

The MTR516 joins other recent Vermeer technology launches aimed at improving underground utility work:
- Verifier G3+ FLX: A new utility locator with fault-finding capabilities, GPS mapping and smartphone integration. It pinpoints underground cable issues with 2- to 3-in. accuracy, reducing unnecessary digging.
- VermeerOne Platform: A centralized digital hub for equipment management. VermeerOne consolidates machine data, maintenance records, warranty details and telematics into one interface. Fleet owners gain real-time tracking, diagnostics and analytics, with options for advanced performance metrics.
Supporting Education: Log Grapples and Loader Case Studies

Vermeer has also helped enhance Compact Equipment’s educational content. The company recently contributed insights to:
- Our log grapple guide, outlining best practices for pairing attachments with small articulated loaders (SALs)
- A case study on Texas-based Clean Scapes Landscaping, which uses Vermeer SALs to streamline material handling on high-end tree care and landscape projects
These efforts show Vermeer’s commitment to both product innovation and industry education.
Final Take
The MTR516 is a purpose-built microtrencher for contractors tackling dense utility corridors, fiber expansion and urban infrastructure upgrades. With its clean cutting capabilities, trenching versatility and jobsite-focused design, it offers a practical edge for contractors installing underground utilities with precision.
