Compact Equipment’s annual Innovative Iron Awards spotlight the year’s most game-changing compact machines, attachments and technologies. The 2025 class showcases major leaps in electrification, smarter control systems, automation, telematics and operator comfort. From battery-powered loaders and ultra-efficient mini excavators to intelligent hydraulic systems, self-leveling booms and climate-controlled cabs, these award winners reflect how innovation is reshaping performance, safety and sustainability across jobsites. Each honoree delivers measurable improvements — longer runtimes, faster cycles, lower emissions and better visibility — proving that compact equipment is evolving faster than ever. The future of earthmoving is here, and it’s smarter, cleaner and more connected. Here’s one of our 2025 Innovative Iron Award winners. Congrats!

John Deere expanded its electric utility vehicle category this year with the all-electric Gator GX and GX Crew. These units deliver quiet operation, instant torque and simplified maintenance in a compact platform built for work. The models also mark a significant shift for the long-running Gator lineup, earning them a spot in this year’s Innovative Iron Awards. We caught up with Eric Halfman, John Deere go-to-market manager for riding lawn equipment and Gator utility vehicles, at Equip Expo in October to discuss these exciting new units.

“We’re looking at a lot of B2B customers for these,” said Halfman, giving a tour on the show floor. “Professional landscape contractors, municipalities, a lot of colleges. We would love to think this is a perfect machine for them, but we know we can expand beyond that. Our Gators just fall into a subset of customers where there’s a million different applications. You look at rural lifestyle, property owners, even producers and horse owners. The sky’s the limit for someone looking for a compact light-duty utility vehicle in a quiet, lithium ion, low maintenance offering.”

All-Electric Powertrain

John Deere builds both models around a 51.2V lithium-ion battery and a single electric motor. The system produces smooth, responsive torque at low speeds. Regenerative braking extends runtime. Operators can plug into a standard 120V outlet thanks to the onboard charger. A 6-m cord and charging indicator come standard. The battery offers 5.376 kWh of nominal capacity. Both units charge overnight, giving property owners and fleet users a simple daily routine with no fuel stops.

“We would say about seven hours of charge time,” said Halfman. “It has a two-year warranty — 1,500 hours. The battery’s a 51.2 volt battery, so it’s pretty peppy. It’ll go almost 20 miles an hour, 19.5 to be exact. It’s a whisper, quiet ride.”

The GX and GX Crew run with zero operating emissions. Landscapers can use them in residential neighborhoods. Parks crews can work near wildlife without disturbance. Indoor and covered spaces also benefit from the lack of exhaust. Noise output drops significantly compared to gas or diesel UTVs.

Utility-Focused Design

John Deere positions the GX platform for light-duty work. The machines are narrow at 53.5 in., which helps them navigate barns, estates and tight paths. Ground clearance reaches 5.9 in. Knobby tires support traction on turf, gravel and uneven terrain. Independent front suspension and semi-independent rear suspension smooth out ruts and bumps. Tall-back seats and a low step height improve comfort during long days.

“It’s a lithium ion battery solution that offers customers a light-duty two or four passenger machine,” noted Halfman. “The four seater also converts from a four passenger vehicle with rear seats full flat to convert into a surface work surface area that you throw a couple hundred pounds in that. This particular machine, you can carry 800 lbs and tow 1,500 lbs.”

GX vs GX Crew

The GX seats two. The GX Crew seats four and includes a unique folding rear bench. Operators can convert the rear row into a 250-lb hauling platform. The cargo area measures 41.5 in. between the handles and 42 in. from the seat back to the base of the handle. This modular design increases versatility for crews carrying both people and materials. Both models offer between-seat storage for long tools and gear. Storage dimensions measure 42 in. wide, 7.5 in. long and 10.5 in. tall.

Simple Controls and Maintenance

Operators turn the key, select a direction and press the go pedal. There is no choke, starter sequence or warm-up time. A dash display shows battery level with a clear LED bar. When charge drops to 20 percent, the gauge flashes to signal the need to plug in. A park brake latch holds the machine in place. Pressing the go pedal automatically releases it. A reverse alarm notifies bystanders. Two USB ports power handheld devices. The electric powertrain eliminates many service items. There is no gasoline to store. There are no oil changes or air filters. There is no CVT belt. John Deere lists no grease points. Seasonal storage also becomes easier with no stabilizer needed. A tow switch under the driver’s seat allows the machine to roll freely for service or recovery.

“There’s really no or low maintenance,” said Halfman. “You just have to charge it and check the tire pressure. We’re basically making sure that charging the machine is essentially the biggest task that you’ll have in ownership.”

Both units use a closed transaxle in an oil bath for longer component life. LED headlights, brake lights and taillights come standard. Fender flares reduce spray and debris. A front brush guard protects the grille and lights. Color options include green and yellow or grey metallic; the latter color you’ll see pictures in this post. John Deere backs the GX lineup with a two-year or 1,500-hour warranty. The battery carries a five-year warranty.

Connectivity and Charging

Available JDLink M connectivity enables fleet tracking and remote diagnostics. Users can monitor status, location and maintenance needs through the familiar John Deere platform. This adds value for municipalities, large properties and rental operations tracking their fleets.

“We have what’s called the John Deere Operation Center to monitor those machines,” said Halfman. “So it makes fleet management easy for those folks that have multiple fleets of equipment even in multiple states. We can keep an eye on things very easily. We can see usage, locations, geofencing. There’s a lot of things people can do from their office versus physically having to touch everything to confirm that it’s still where it’s supposed to be.”

When it comes to charging, Deere integrates the charger directly into the machine. Operators can charge anywhere with a grounded 120V outlet. The port sits under the driver’s seat for easy reach. There is no need to return to a fixed charging dock, which expands deployment options for rural properties and dispersed work zones.

Lighting and Visibility

LED lighting improves visibility at dawn, dusk and in covered environments. Buyers can add turn signals, mirrors and dual-beam headlights through a comfort and convenience package. Side reflectors improve machine visibility from all angles. The open sightlines and compact stance help operators navigate crowded areas and narrow trails with confidence.

“This machine that we’re looking at today is similar to your automotive vehicle with light switches and signal lights,” noted Halfman. “So this has signal lights, tail lights, brake lights, headlights, dual beam headlights and a horn. There are USB charging ports on it. Really comfortable seats. Yeah. It’s another one of our Gators in the lineup that makes work fun.”

Why the GX and GX Crew Earn an Innovative Iron Award

The GX and GX Crew target users who need a dependable runabout for hauling tools, moving people and supporting daily tasks. They fit well in landscape operations, large properties, farms, resorts and corporate campuses. Their quieter profile also benefits universities and park districts.

The GX platform introduces full electrification to one of the most recognized UTV lines in North America. Deere avoids gimmicks and focuses on fundamentals: runtime, torque, usability and reduced maintenance. The folding rear seating on the Crew model adds meaningful flexibility. The onboard charging and simple control layout reduce operator learning time. The machines feel engineered for practical daily work rather than experimental adoption. That balance of innovation and usability is exactly what the Innovative Iron Awards celebrate.

“The GX electric is $17,499 starting out, and then the GX Crew is $19,499,” said Halfman. “So, they’re affordable machines that come with front brush guards as well as roofs and many other options from there.”
