Contractors should consider several factors when determining which walk-behind trencher will meet their jobsite demands.
• Evaluate limitations — Consider the terrain, types of soils encountered, common obstacles, local ordinances and typical jobsites that you are likely to encounter. Can the trencher accomplish the job effectively?
• Types of installations — Carefully analyze the type and size of products most often installed (irrigation, pipe, cable, etc.), the trench width and depth, frequency of use and attachments that can help increase productivity and reduce labor.
• Operation — The more convenient a trencher is to use, the more efficient and productive you can be. Machine functions should be easy to explain and understand. Controls should be clearly labeled and arranged.
• Maintenance — Ask to review the equipment’s operator’s manual. Look for models with extended maintenance periods, fewer daily service points and features that make the trencher easier to service and repair.
• Product support — Can the manufacturer provide timely access to parts and service? Does the equipment come with a warranty? What is covered and how long does it last? Consider the manufacturer’s reputation and its dealer support network. This is especially important if you perform jobs in several states where access to your home dealer may not be convenient.
