Skid Steers in 2025: Still in the Game

Skid steer loaders may no longer dominate compact loader sales, but don’t count them out. In the latest episode of Machine Heads Interviews, Wayne Grayson sits down with Kyle Emmanuel of Bobcat to talk about the current state of skid steers in 2025. The conversation covers why the wheeled loader still matters, how the category is evolving and what Bobcat is offering in today’s market. In a construction world leaning toward tracks, this episode explores the advantages of sticking with wheels — and when doing so makes the most sense.

Compact track loaders now make up roughly 80 percent of compact loader sales. Their ability to tackle soft ground and rough terrain keeps them in high demand. But that doesn’t mean the skid steer is obsolete. Emmanuel points out several use cases where skid steers outperform CTLs:

  • Snow removal: Wheels break through ice and snow better.
  • Road work and paving: Tires excel on hard surfaces.
  • Agriculture and barn work: Easier to maneuver and clean.
  • Rental: Lower acquisition and maintenance costs.
  • Travel: Skid steers are lighter and faster across hard-packed sites.

They also cost less up front and are simpler to maintain thanks to fewer moving undercarriage parts.

Skid steers aren’t standing still. New models now come with sealed cabs, touchscreen displays, advanced diagnostics and integrated attachment recognition. Bobcat, in particular, has added its MaxControl system, allowing operators to drive machines remotely using a smartphone — ideal for solo operators managing multiple machines. Hydraulic power has also climbed. High- and super-flow options now allow modern skid steers to run heavy-duty attachments like planers and snow blowers with ease. Bobcat’s top-end model, the S86, offers up to 42 gpm of flow in its Super Flow setting.

Bobcat continues to offer one of the most diverse skid steer rosters on the market. With 10 models ranging from the 23.5-hp S70 to the 105-hp S86, Bobcat covers nearly every need and size class.

Here’s a quick breakdown:

  • S70: Ultra-compact, 3-ft wide, ideal for indoor or tight-space work.
  • S450 and S510: Older M-series models offering proven performance at a lower price.
  • S590 and S64: Mid-size machines with solid hydraulic performance.
  • S66 and S76: Popular R-series machines with 74-hp engines, advanced cab features and multiple package options.
  • S770 and S86: High-performance models. The S86 tops the chart with three hydraulic flow settings and serious attachment power.

Bobcat’s most popular model? The 74-hp S76. It balances power, size and cost — staying under emissions thresholds while offering extensive configuration flexibility.

Skid steers may no longer dominate the jobsite, but they remain a vital tool across construction, agriculture and rental sectors. With modern features and lower cost of ownership, they’re still the right choice for many.
