John Deere’s P-Tier Skid Steers vs. Track Loaders: FAQs About Each Category’s Features

skid steer vs track loader John Deere units

John Deere’s P-Tier skid steers and compact track loaders (CTL) maximize operators’ efforts through increased horsepower, advanced technology and updated hydraulics systems.

“The P-Tier compact machines take a contractor to their next level of productivity,” said Scott Weness, RDO’s regional sales manager with decades of experience with compact machinery. “Operators say the P-Tier’s cab is quiet and comfortable with an 8-in. display, providing an expanded field of vision.”

Minnesota contractors agree. The P-Tier compact machinery’s features are focused on performance, empowering operators to increase accuracy and efficiency. P-Tier skid steers and CTLs have a 270-degree-view camera so operators can closely monitor their work from a large, climate-controlled cab. Both the 334P skid steer and 335 CTL have an upgraded hydraulic system, pumping out 44GPM at 4000PSI. Some models, like the 335P CTL, are SmartGrade ready, allowing operators to use either 2D or 3D grade control with Topcon Positioning Systems. Consider frequently asked questions about these models.

334 P-Tier Skid Steer

  • What’s the One-line Description? The 334P’s wheels perform best on hard surfaces and move dense material at site development or roadbuilding sites.
  • How Does it Compare to G-Tier Models? The 334 has upgraded lifting capacity compared to the G series and an entirely new hydraulic system that allows for the most demanding hydraulic-intensive attachments.
  • What’s the Availability? Dealers say compact track loaders (CTLs) are easier to find than skid steers right now. Talk to an established dealer like RDO Equipment Co., which has a large network and can source machines from the manufacturer or other locations.

335 P-Tier Compact Track Loader

  • What’s the One-line Description? The 335P navigates rough and uneven terrain. Its tracks and anti-vibration undercarriage enhance performance in mulching and high-flow attachment applications.
  • How Does it Compare to G-Tier Models? P-Tier’s SmartGrade readiness and other technology, like John Deere Operations Center’s Attachment Manager, give operators tools to work confidently and consistently.
  • What’s the Availability? First released last summer, many machines quickly went from a dealer’s rental fleet to the job site. As we head into the busy construction season, contractors should talk to their trusted equipment experts about specific availability

What’s Next? Service and Support

After deciding on your preferred model, it’s time to consider renting versus purchasing. When a contractor wants to try the machine before deciding to finance, they may opt for renting with a reliable dealer like RDO. Minnesota contractors have access to an inventory of low-hour and well-maintained equipment.

Next, discuss service and support expectations. When purchasing or renting P-Tier compact equipment, a warranty will most likely be available from John Deere. In addition, John Deere allows customers to extend their factory warranty hours during the first two years.

RDO has programs focused on field service to keep machines up and running, including the RDO Promise. For the same duration as John Deere’s warranty, the RDO Promise ensures that if a machine requires maintenance, a skilled technician will respond within five hours of RDO being notified. Whether renting or buying, RDO offers remote support and machine health monitoring services, providing quick connections to field service and preventative repairs for the machine’s lifetime. Connected machines and remote support teams save valuable time so compact machines can stay up and running.

Contact your local RDO store to ask questions about John Deere’s compact machines, or browse available equipment at RDOEquipment.com.

Dan Strong is RDO’s CCE Manager. He partners with customers to ensure they have the right compact machine in their fleet to get the job done.
