New Holland’s New E42D and E50D Mini Excavators Are the Brand’s First Fully Engineered In-House

New Holland Construction has added two models to its compact lineup with the launch of the D-Series E42D and E50D mini excavators. These machines mark the company’s first fully in-house engineered excavators, a move aimed at improving performance, durability and operator experience. Currently New Holland’s excavators are primarily supplied through partnerships with Hyundai and Sampierana. From the press release:
“The D-Series represents a new era for New Holland Construction excavators: Built by us, for our customers, with every detail focused on operator experience, performance and jobsite efficiency,” says Dan Kakareka, product manager for New Holland Construction North America. “This is the result of what we heard from customers and operators about what they need in this class size. A machine that works harder, handles better and keeps operators comfortable all day long.”
Filling the Middle of the Lineup
The E42D and E50D slot into New Holland’s range between the smaller E37C and the larger E60D. Overall, the company’s mini excavator lineup now stretches from the tiny E17C at just 3,910 lbs operating weight and 16+ hp to the E57D at 12,050 lbs operating weight and 66+ hp. Above those sits the 20,000-lb operating weight E90D midi excavator, which Compact Equipment recognized as one of our favorite machines of 2024. With these additions, New Holland now fields a competitive mini and midi lineup for landscapers, utility contractors, municipalities and rental fleets.
Compact Size, Jobsite Power
The new D-Series models are designed for tight jobsites. Both the E42D and E50D feature zero tail swing, long-arm options, rubber or steel tracks and blade choices, including a six-way blade with float. Dual auxiliary hydraulic lines come standard, while an optional third high-flow line supports demanding tools like mulchers. An FPT Stage V engine powers both machines. Efficiency features include Eco Mode, auto idle and a reversible fan that keeps the cooling package clear. Serviceability is simplified with a tilting cab/canopy and large access panels.
Operator-Focused Cab Design
Inside the cab, New Holland prioritized operator comfort. Both canopy and cab versions are available, with standard features that include:
- Pneumatic suspension seat with auto weight control
- Joystick-mounted controls that move with the seat
- Climate control with six directional vents
- LED lighting for visibility in low-light conditions
A 7-in. color LCD monitor provides real-time machine feedback. Safety equipment includes a rearview camera, travel alarms, a control cut-out lever and emergency exit hammer. USB and 12V ports, a sliding right-side window and overhead front window add practical touches. From the press release:
“We designed the E42D and E50D to deliver every time customers fire them up, but we’re not stopping there. This is the first step in the evolution of our D-Series mini excavators. More sizes, features and power are on the way as we expand the lineup,” Kakareka says.
Ready for Attachments and Connectivity
The E42D and E50D arrive factory-ready for couplers, buckets and thumbs. They also come standard with a five-year telematics subscription, giving owners remote machine monitoring and diagnostics from day one.
Final Thoughts
The E42D and E50D give New Holland operators two new choices in the heart of the compact excavator category. Built in-house, these D-Series machines focus on efficiency, attachment versatility and operator comfort. Combined with the standout E90D, New Holland’s excavator family is stronger and more complete than ever.
