Komatsu entered the compact excavator market in the mid-1990s. Today’s newest members of the compact family are the PC78US-10, PC55MR-5 and the PC45MR-5. These Tier 4 Final models do not require selective catalytic reduction (SCR) to meet Tier 4 Final regulations. Komatsu reliability, particularly in its construction and mining class excavators, also applies to its six compact models, says the company. Komatsu’s compact excavators have many of the same features as their larger counterparts, with improvements designed to address customer needs such as a dozer blade for backfilling and auxiliary hydraulics for powering attachments.
Komatsu developed different blade options for some models to further improve productivity during back-filling, as well as auxiliary hydraulics with a foot pedal or optional joystick controls. Swing boom models also add to the versatility of the compact excavator line by making it possible to dig parallel to a structure such as a building or fence. Three main track options: rubber, road-liner and steel tracks are available. Several types of attachments such as buckets and thumbs are also available to make these units even more versatile.
Common features include technologies like the closed-center load sensing system (CCLS) and the Hydraulic Mechanical Intelligence system (HydrauMind), which provides the operator precise control at all times, regardless of the load or multifunction use. Pattern change valves are also standard, allowing operators to switch from ISO to backhoe control patterns.
The Komtrax machine monitoring system, provided at no additional cost, allows managers to track machine usage, location and fuel consumption. Komatsu compact excavators have large excavator size features, says the company, such as steel castings in high stress areas — such as the boom foot and tip — for long equipment life. Komatsu notes that its excavators are distinguished by the Komatsu-designed and -manufactured components that maintain the legendary quality and reliability for which Komatsu is known.
Advice to Buyers
“The total cost of ownership vs. just purchase price is important and should not be overlooked. Durability and reliability are important factors when purchasing a compact excavator,” explains Bruce Boebel, senior product manager with Komatsu America Corp. “Castings used in work equipment can be more resistant to torsional stresses than fabrications. Major components designed in-house can make a significant difference in quality, serviceability, ease of repair and the overall operator experience. They work together harmoniously and can be designed to better work with the overall machine design. Ease of service is also another important area.”
