Hyundai Excavators — 2016 Spec Guide

Six Compact Crawlers Bring More Power to Tight Spaces

Since 1981, Hyundai Construction Equipment Americas has been an integral part of the global construction equipment business of Hyundai Heavy Industry. Hyundai introduced its first compact excavator — the R15-7 — in 2005, consistent with its strategy of providing a full spectrum of excavators to meet the needs of a broad range of customers and applications. The current 9A Series is Hyundai’s fourth generation of compact excavators. Equipped with Tier 4 Final engines, the 9A Series excavators offer power, durability and reliability, along with the ability to work productively in confined spaces.

Standard features include large dozer blades, quick-couplers for attachments and auxiliary hydraulic piping enabling operators to take on a variety of jobs. Enhanced reliability features include bushings designed for long-life lube intervals and integrated preheating systems, which extend service intervals and reduce machine downtime.

Precision hydraulic system technologies make the 9A Series compact excavators fast, smooth and easy to control, says Hyundai. The boom swing function is designed for efficient work in congested areas. The boom can be offset left or right.

Hyundai currently offers six models of compact excavators, ranging from the R17Z-9A, with an operating weight of 3,747 lbs and a Tier 4 Final 15.8-hp engine, to the R80CR-9A, with an operating weight of 18,190 lbs and a Tier 4 Final 65-hp engine. Hyundai excavators are compatible with a full spectrum of third-party attachments, as well as five models of Hyundai brand hydraulic breakers. Among the more popular compact models is the Hyundai R35Z-9A, which features a heavy-duty upper frame that absorbs high stress loads on the job. Its X-leg center frame and reinforced box section track frame provide strength and longer service life to withstand tough working conditions. The R35Z-9A excavator is powered by a Tier 4 Final-certified Yanmar engine.

Control devices are all located for improved operator comfort and productivity, says Hyundai. The R35Z-9A hydraulic system provides fast operation with fine control capabilities. The canopy-style frame ensures operator safety and complies with international standards for TOPS, ROPS and FOPS. The R35Z-9A features a suspension seat and foldable pedals for added space, with multiple storage compartments. The monitoring system includes seven warning indicators, water temperature gauge, fuel gauge and hour meter for productive, convenient operating.

Advice to Buyers

“Work with your authorized dealer to specify the right machine for your job, in terms of size, power and required attachments,” says Corey Rogers, marketing manager with Hyundai. “Keep in mind how you will be moving the machine between jobs. Contractors can tow smaller models behind a pickup truck. Many compact models may even be trailered along with a second machine such as a skid steer or another compact excavator.”
