Fresh off announcing a software update that boosts speed and productivity for its 303.5 CR mini excavator, Caterpillar is rolling out another wave of digital and mechanical upgrades — this time across its 5- to 10-metric-ton compact excavator lineup. The Cat 305 CR, 308 CR, 309 CR and 310 models all gain new ease-of-use systems, powertrain improvements and camera options, extending Cat’s next-generation mini excavator tech to more machines. Let’s dig in.

305 CR Joins the E-Fence and Indicate Club

The 5-metric ton Cat 305 CR now ships from the factory ready for Cat’s Ease-of-Use (EOU) technology package. Operators can add or activate E-Fence and Indicate functionality, giving this smaller model the same digital assist options found on Cat’s 6- to 10-metric-ton units. E-Fence automatically restricts machine movement within operator-defined boundaries. It helps prevent the boom, stick or bucket from contacting nearby obstacles or utilities. The system can be configured for:

  • Ceiling — helps operators avoid overhead obstacles such as powerlines, ceilings or tree limbs.
  • Floor — defined depth limits help protect underground fiberoptic cables and utilities.
  • Wall — operating limits protects structures in front of the excavator.
  • Swing — ideal for avoiding swinging into live traffic areas or walkways and to help with truck loading.

The Indicate grade system provides visual and audible cues that help operators hit precise depths and slopes without over- or under-digging. A new Laser Catcher option adds external laser reference capability for large or multi-position jobsites.

8- to 10-Tonne Models Get Engine, Hydraulic and Camera Upgrades

Caterpillar’s larger mini excavators — the 308 CR, 309 CR and 310 — transition to the new Cat C2.8 engine. The smaller displacement engine matches the power output of the outgoing C3.3B while reducing service needs. The Tier 4 Final/Stage V-compliant setup uses a maintenance-free DOC and DPF system to simplify ownership. A third auxiliary hydraulic circuit is now available to handle complex hydromechanical attachments. Cat also made visibility a priority:

  • All three models now include a rearview camera as standard
  • The 310 adds a side-view camera standard
  • The 308 CR and 309 CR can add the side-view camera as an option

New Angle Blade Option for the 308 CR

The 308 CR gains a factory angle blade option designed to simplify backfilling and grading. Integrated Stick Steer and blade control through the right joystick allow the excavator to function like a small dozer. The package includes blade float and a reversible three-piece bolt-on cutting edge to extend wear life.
