Excellent infographic: Five major bridge designs
The mighty infographic! May you continue to simplify complex information into easy-on-the-eyes images that enhance the human visual system, increasing our obsessiveness to over-analyze patterns and trends. We applaud the infographic below created by Ohio University’s Online Masters in Civil Engineering program, noting our office is full of mostly Bobcat grads.
It can be hard to imagine a world without bridges, just getting home from a friend’s house might take several days instead of five minutes, fortunately the ancient Romans stepped up to the plate. These upcoming OU engineers took a look at the five major bridge designs in our World’s history and examined the people and cultures they connect.
Clapper Bridges
Made of unmortared stone slabs built on piers in the water and are amongst the oldest around.
Beam Bridges
In their simplest form, Beam Bridges are two piers at either end with a plank spanning the gap. Beam bridges rarely span more than 250 feet.
Truss Bridges
Truss Bridges are composed of load bearing triangular structures (a truss) with the platform on top.
Arch Bridges
Arch Bridges have an abutment at either end and are shaped in the form of an arch.
Suspension Bridges use cables suspended from large anchorage structures connected to the ground.
