The Tractor Pool

The challenge of a tractor pull is a great tradition. Souped-up dragster-style machines, spitting smoke, noise and dirt, pull increasingly heavy sleds of weight to see who can tow the most, the farthest, through 300 yards of muddy track.

However, real tractor users aren’t looking for a machine with heavy drag. In fact, owners of utility tractors — those do-it all tool carriers used by farmers, landscapers and large estate owners — need equipment that goes beyond just strong and focuses on streamlined, efficient and productive. Mow grass, dig trenches, auger holes or pick and place large piles of dirt or gravel with a compact utility tractor’s power take off attachment system (PTO). Compact tractors are a versatile breed of machine, taking implements in the front, back and under the belly, pulling way more than its weight on most jobsites.

Today’s compact tractors are defined as small agricultural tractors equipped with a 540-rpm PTO and a three-point hitch designed for Category 1 implements. Compact tractors generally have a mass less than 4,000 lbs and use less than 40 PTO hp to run their attachments. Today, John Deere, Kubota and New Holland are the three most popular manufacturers of these machines — all with decades worth of compact tractor experience. Yet, there are plenty of new players primed to accommodate the growing compact tractor market (one of small equipment’s most explosive machine categories over the last 10 years). Case IH, Cub Cadet Yanmar, KIOTI and Massey Ferguson are all bringing innovative alternatives to the small utility tractor market.

There are hundreds of model choices and unique features galore. So before you start worrying about brand, you will first need to figure out what you want this tractor to do. But after you zero in on your weekly applications (major jobs, jobsite sizes, price points and storage areas), you’ll need a nice catalog of the major brands and models to survey the market before you buy. Over the next 11 pages, “The Tractor Pool” brings together the seven top names in the compact tractor industry (units between 20 and 40 PTO hp). We have pulled together the histories, product summaries, advice and even pricing (national MSRPs) of the biggest names in utility tractors, creating the ultimate encyclopedia of small commercial units.

So the next time you see a chore tractor blasting through the dirt, hauling a heavy load, it will be your tailor-made machine, outfitted with the ideal specs and technologies to pull you or your company ahead of the competition.

John Deere Compact Tractors

The Biggest Model Selection from the Biggest Brand in Utility Tractors

History

John Deere entered the compact tractor market in 1980 with the introduction of its 650 tractor model. Today, the company offers 17 different models in its compact utility tractor lineup. Over the last 20-plus years, John Deere has evolved from offering one chassis size in just one tractor series, to three chassis sizes in two different series. John Deere serves small and large property owners, part-time producers, agriculture producers, business-to-business customers and governmental and construction customers. The company’s ultimate goal is to continue developing tractors that meet every customer’s need and budget.

Products

Currently, John Deere offers 17 compact utility tractor (CUT) models in three sizes: small chassis, mid chassis and large chassis. The company also offers a tractor loader backhoe (TLB) unit that is based on the large chassis platform. Ranging from 24 to 66 hp, units in the John Deere CUT line weigh anywhere from 1,400 to 4,345 lbs, and the TLB tops out at 7,600 lbs.

John Deere’s newest models are the 3E Series, including the 3032E and 3038E. These innovative, yet simple tractors offer a hydrostatic transmission that delivers all the quality and durability that an operator should expect from a John Deere tractor. The John Deere name brings with it a rich history of innovation. That being said, the company’s products offer numerous unique features, including:

eHydro — This feature is an electronically controlled hydrostatic transmission that offers advanced features such as automotive-style cruise control, LoadMatch (prevents engine stalls under heavy loads), SpeedMatch (allows operator to set a preset maximum speed for speed sensitive applications) and MotionMatch (allows operator to select aggressiveness of transmission rollout).

iMatch and AutoHitch — This feature allows operators to change between rotary cutters and rotary tillers without leaving the seat. Operators can hook up the implement and driveline from the seat of the tractor.

AutoConnect Mid-Mount Mowers — This feature allows the operator to drive the tractor on top of the mid-mount mower deck. The deck will then automatically connect, along with the PTO drive line as well.

ComfortGard Cabs — This feature is one of the best cabs in its class. Offering a 15,000-BTU HVAC system, the ComfortGard Cab is pressure sealed to keep noise and the elements out. A compact disc player and radio are other options available with this feature.

Along with those innovative features, John Deere always keeps safety in mind. Some of these safety features include: roll over protection structures (ROPS) that are SAE, ASAE and OSHA certified for maximum protection of operators; a safety switch in the seat that cuts off the engine if the operator exits the seat while the PTO is engaged (tractors will also not start if the PTO is engaged); and standard seat belts.

Advice to Buyers

“Think of all the jobs you want to do today and in the future,” says Dan Paschke, John Deere C&CE division compact tractor marketing. “The future is very important because if you need a certain hydraulic or PTO configuration, you want to make sure you can add it and not have to replace your tractor. At John Deere, we recommend buying just slightly more tractor then you think you need. We never hear people say they bought too much tractor but rather only hear they didn’t buy enough. However large and however much power you buy, people always find a way to push their tractor to its limits. Figure out what you think you need and go up one power level. Also, find a dealer you trust and think will be in business five to 10 years from now. Dealer support is one of the most important decisions you can make and you need to trust whoever you buy. It is worth a little additional money to get a tractor from the dealer who will service the product to ensure you have a good relationship.”

Kubota Compact Tractors

Japan’s Orange Tractor Loaders Lift Contractors with B-, L- and M-Series Units

History

In 1972 Kubota Tractor Corp. developed its first compact utility tractor, the 17-hp L175, “The tractor for people who want more than a garden tractor.” Within the next five years, Kubota introduced all of its primary tractor lines — the B-, L- and M-Series including the B6000 known as the “Little Tractor that’s Big on Work.” Since then Kubota continues to be a market leader in the development and innovation of the compact utility tractor with the new B20 Series, new B3200- and Standard L- and Grand L-Series.

Products

Kubota has several compact tractor models, including the new B-Series, the L-Series and the Grand L-40 Series, featuring performance-matched front loaders, backhoes and other implements for increased versatility in a variety of applications.

The new Kubota B-Series compact tractors boast power, comfort and versatility to tackle a wide variety of tasks. The B2320, B2620 and B2920 are each equipped with a three-cylinder, liquid-cooled diesel engine that ranges in gross horsepower from 23 to 29, depending on model. The B3200 leads the pack with a four-cylinder, 32 gross hp, high performance E-TVCS (three-vortex combustion system) Kubota diesel engine, power steering, standard mid-PTO and an 8.1-gal fuel tank. The three-range shift (high/medium/low) featured on the new B-Series hydrostatic drive (HSD) models lets operators find the right speed to suit their task, providing smooth shifting and powerful performance for heavy-duty loader applications.

All models in the B-Series are equipped with a variety of safety features including: multi-reflective headlights for better visibility; backlit dash panel making it easier to read dashboard operations; and a slanted metal hood increasing visibility of front loader operations.

Kubota’s Standard L-Series compact tractors deliver a high-level of productivity with deluxe features at an economical price. The L2800, L3400 and the L4400 are offered in both HSD and gear models powered by a Kubota E-TVCS liquid-cooled diesel engine, and boast 30, 35.7 and 45 gross hp respectively. A semi-flat deck on the L2800 and the L3400 offer more platform space, while a full-flat deck and hanging-type pedals on the L4400 offer optimal space and ease of operation.

Kubota’s deluxe line of Grand L40 compact tractors delivers comfort and versatility to tackle a range of residential and commercial jobs. The Grand L40 tractors are built around Kubota’s industry-leading, three-vortex combustion-system engines (E-TVCS). Ranging from 34 to 59 gross hp, these diesel engines have large displacement to create high power output and PTO torque, along with an Interim Tier IV engine with cleaner emissions and less vibration.

Advice to Buyers

“Prior to purchasing, a customer should make a list of all the important applications and prioritize the jobs by their order of importance,” says Jeremy Coltin, Kubota product manager. “This can be a bit tricky since the job that you spend the most time on may not be the reason for purchasing the tractor. If a customer purchases a compact utility tractor for landscaping on their acreage, however, snow removal on the acreage is necessary and more demanding. The snow application may be the top priority to consider when picking the right tractor — not the less demanding job of landscaping.”

Bobcat Compact Tractors

The American King of Compact Equipment Makes Eight Models of Tractors

History

If any company knows compact equipment, it’s Bobcat Co., which started a compact revolution 50 years ago when it introduced the skid steer. Today the company has expanded into mini excavators, compact utility loaders, attachments, utility vehicles, telehandlers and even compact tractors. The company meets the needs of homeowners with acreage, landscape contractors, buildings and grounds maintenance professionals and other users who already own and operate compact equipment such as loaders, utility work machines and telescopic tool carriers. Bobcat introduced a line of compact tractors in 2008 to help these users work better, smarter and faster.

Products

Bobcat equipment has always been about versatility. The same is true of the eight tractor models offered by Bobcat. All tractors accept Category 1 implements. Most models are equipped with a deluxe three-point hitch, with telescoping lower links, telescoping sway bars and a crank-style lower lift adjustment. This type of three-point hitch makes it easier for one person to hook implements up to the tractor. All an operator has to do is get close to the implement, telescope the lower links to line up the pins and sway the bars side to side. Customers can choose a standard rear power take-off (PTO) that is live or independent. A mid-mount PTO is available as an option.

A front-end loader is an option on all Bobcat tractors and can be equipped with the Bob-Tach mounting system, which allows the operator to quickly change between a bucket and a pallet fork. All Bobcat tractors have four-wheel drive for traveling over difficult terrain and hydrostatic transmissions for ease of operation.

Comfortable, color-coded controls are within easy reach and the integrated joystick control for the front-end loader is designed to allow easy access to either side of the operator station, even when the loader is mounted. An adjustable suspension seat, tilt steering and open foot space make long hours on Bobcat tractors more comfortable. Four of the largest models in the Bobcat line are available with optional cabs, which have heat and air conditioning and are radio-ready for increased operator comfort. The cab windows are made of curved glass to reduce glare for better visibility and there is a window at the bottom rear of the cab so the operator can more easily see the three-point hitch for implement hookup. The cabs have doors on both sides of the tractor, which is convenient because the machines are often parked next to buildings, fences and other obstructions, so additional maneuvering is not necessary for the operator to exit.

Bobcat compact tractors range in size from 22 to 50 hp, have hydrostatic transmissions and boast two or three travel speeds, depending on the model.

Advice to Buyers

“Make a list of all the tasks you want to accomplish with your compact tractor, and how much time you want to spend on these tasks. This will help you identify the types of implements you will need and help you to select the proper size of tractor,” says Bryan Zent, marketing manager for Bobcat. “Visit with your local dealer and request a demonstration to make sure the tractor is capable of accomplishing your main tasks while also being easy and comfortable to operate.”

New Holland Compact Tractors

The Blue Boomer Line Combines Style, Power and Efficiency into Serious Chore Tractors

History

The launch of the New Holland Boomer compact tractor line in 1997 reflected New Holland’s commitment to the production of the kind of compact but powerful machines sought by customers for a variety of uses. The Boomer line is assembled in Dublin, Ga. The latest addition to the company’s Boomer line — the new Boomer 8N — is a thoroughly modern version of the once popular Ford 8N first sold in 1948 and celebrates New Holland’s Ford tractor heritage. The Boomer 8N compact tractor combines vintage design with modern, innovative amenities.

Products

New Holland offers a complete line of Boomer sub-compact and compact tractors and the T1500 line of economy compact tractors. New Holland’s Boomer compact tractors range from 20 to 50 hp and feature a stylish sloped hood, lighting and industry-leading exclusive features such as the tight-turning SuperSteer front axle and Sensitrak automatic four-wheel drive engagement.

The exclusive SuperSteer front-wheel drive axle gives Boomer the tightest turnaround diameter on the market (say company officials) — up to 50 percent smaller than other compacts. The Sensitrak system automatically engages and disengages four-wheel drive and ensures that Boomer tractors go easy on your turf and provide better fuel efficiency and increased pulling power. The new Boomer 8N features distinctive, timeless styling, a continuously variable transmission (CVT) that creates a fun, easy, car-like driving experience, as well as a variety of customizable accessories. This updated version of the classic 8N is now available for those seeking reliable power wrapped in a compact and time-honored package.

The CVT provides smooth, seamless speed changes using a single pedal to control both travel speed and engine speed. The operator can simply press the pedal and go, and the transmission will automatically adjust to deliver the desired speed and match load conditions. The CVT transmission is available on New Holland’s Boomer 3040, 3045 and 3050 compact cab tractors, and on the Boomer 8N.

New Holland economy compact tractors offer high performance at prices that fit budgets. The T1520 and T1510 represent the broadest offering of value-priced, 30-hp tractors on the market, which means you can custom-build a tractor with the exact features you need. The new T1530 is a 45-hp model. A choice of transmissions is something you won’t find on many competitive value-priced tractors. The 9×3 mechanical transmission provides more speed choices than competitive 8×2 transmissions, while the convenient hydrostatic transmission is a New Holland exclusive when compared to most competitive tractors of this class and price range.

New Holland’s economy tractors include a roomy operator station designed to allow the operator to work more efficiently and productively and convenient access to service points makes refueling and routine maintenance a snap.

Advice to Buyers

“First, evaluate what tasks you want to do and how much time you want to spend doing them. Based on those two criteria, decide what your priority is,” says Rory Chisholm, New Holland North America product marketing manager for compact tractors. “Whether you’re mowing, digging holes or moving dirt, you can usually do the job with a smaller tractor, which will take longer, or with a larger tractor, which will get the job done quicker. The size and the weight of the tractor will dictate how easy a tractor is to tow. A bigger tractor will require a bigger truck to pull it, will take up more space on your trailer and may limit other equipment you can haul at the same time. Again, it’s looking at what is the best compromise.”

KIOTI Compact Tractors

South Korea’s Value Leader Offers Over 20 Variations of Utility Tractors

History

KIOTI Tractor, a division of Daedong Industrial-USA, began marketing compact tractors, implements, attachments and accessories in North America in 1986. Since that time, KIOTI has made many enhancements and additions to its tractor line. KIOTI is a market-driven company and continues daily to improve and expand upon product functionality, with each innovation designed to meet and exceed its customer’s current and future needs. Daedong-USA Inc. is a subsidiary of Daedong Industrial Co. Ltd. Today KIOTI products are distributed through an expanding dealer network of more than 250 dealers and their fulfillment centers in the United States.

Products

KIOTI manufactures more than 20 different tractor models, ranging from 22 to 90 hp. Its tractor line is complemented by eight loader models, three backhoe models and a variety of productive attachments, implements and accessories from which to choose.

Because KIOTI manufactures every major component on its tractors, including the engine, it’s able to maintain stringent quality control standards on each tractor manufactured. As such, KIOTI stands behind their tractor with an exclusive four-year, full-fleet warranty, which covers both commercial and residential uses without an hourly usage ceiling. All KIOTI tractors are environmentally friendly, featuring diesel engines made by KIOTI’s parent company Daedong Industrial that meet or exceed EPA, CARB and EEC regulations. They offer low fuel consumption and boast quiet operation with lower vibrations than engines found in competitive model tractors.

Many KIOTI tractors are available with a hydrostatic transmission, which varies the tractor’s forward and reverse speed within a gear range by depressing a pedal similar to the accelerator pedal in a car. This is an extremely user-friendly option that allows operators to get comfortable running the machine very quickly. A hydrostatic transmission also allows instant transition between forward and reverse without the use of a clutch, allowing the operator’s hands to remain free for steering and controlling the attachments and implements.

All KIOTI tractors come with a 540-rpm rear PTO as standard equipment. All DK models have electric over hydraulically engaged PTOs. Some models offer an optional mid-PTO. For safety purposes, a fold-down roll bar is standard on every KIOTI tractor except those with cabs or four-post ROPS. All cab models include an enclosed ROPS to protect the operator and workstation in the event of an accidental rollover.

KIOTI manufactures tractors that come standard with four-wheel drive and a three-point hitch. The four-wheel drive allows operators to work in various terrains without the fear of getting stuck, while the three-point hitches provide versatility for those looking to work with attachments or implements. With an adjustable right side lift rod and top link on the three-point hitch, mounting an implement or attachment is easy. Most KIOTI models come with telescopic end links as standard equipment.

KIOTI tractor focuses on supplying high-quality compact tractors to the contractor, homeowner, hobby farm, landscaper, utility, professional maintenance, equine and rental markets through their national dealer network, who also provides after-the-sales parts and service support. Each local KIOTI dealer is trained and equipped to efficiently maintain KIOTI compact tractors to keep them running efficiently and productively.

Advice to Buyers

“When shopping for a compact tractor, do your homework and set a budget before visiting a dealership. There are many online resources available today such as www.tractor.net, which can help get you educated quickly,” says Ron Parrish, market development manager for KIOTI Tractor. “After completing your initial research, visit the local dealer for each tractor you’re considering buying. A competent dealer will be able to correctly size a tractor to best fit your purposes. This will either confirm your research or it will give you an indication that more research may be required prior to making a buying decision. In addition to doing your research and making a comparable comparison, take a hard look at the manufacturer’s warranty. A long-term warranty that covers both commercial and residential uses is your best bet to minimize downtime and avoid unexpected repair costs.”

Cub Cadet Yanmar Compact Tractors

Innovation, Quality and Performance Come Standard in All Four Models

History

Cub Cadet was established in 1961 as part of International Harvester (IH). During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners of increasingly popular rural homes with large yards and private gardens. Today the company is a leading maker of mowers, outdoor power equipment, utility vehicles and compact tractors. In February 2007, Cub Cadet and Yanmar announced a joint venture to develop a line of compact utility tractors and implements in the United States and Canada. The unity of these two powerhouses brings a new line of well-designed, high performance products up to 50 hp (PTO).

Products

Just two years after inception, Cub Cadet Yanmar has established its network of dealers and a line of high-quality, sub-compact and compact tractors ranging from 24 to 45 hp. Beginning with the launch of the Ex3200 in 2007, Cub Cadet Yanmar now offers consumers the Ex2900, Ex450 and the Sc2400 model compact tractors, as well as a full line of attachments. All Cub Cadet Yanmar products feature an ergonomic design and come standard with features like selectable four-wheel drive, diesel engines and transmissions and fully hydraulic power steering.

Designed for everything from the backyard to the farm, the Ex3200 features a 32-hp Yanmar diesel engine with large displacement and an extra-large flywheel for smooth performance even when using attachments. The engines are both powerful and fuel-efficient and are matched to the transmission, delivering consistent horsepower to the job at hand. Complete with clean sightlines, a tight 43-degree inside turning radius and narrow tread for superior balance, the Ex3200 can handle big jobs in tight spaces.

Built to complement its more powerful counterpart, the Ex2900 is equipped with a 28.7-hp Yanmar diesel engine and combines many of the features of the already existing Ex3200 with a slightly lower horsepower and price point. For users who aren’t quite ready to step up to a compact tractor but wanted more power and versatility than their garden tractors have to offer, Cub Cadet Yanmar offers the Sc2400 sub-compact tractor. The smallest and most versatile of Cub Cadet Yanmar’s product line, this tractor is powered by a 24-hp Yanmar diesel engine specially designed to allow air to enter at both a higher volume and greater pressure to create a better fuel mix. The Sc2400 includes exclusive features designed for ease-of-use and comfort, including: a shift-on-the-go transmission that allows the operator to shift from high to low without stopping; easy-to-use selectable cruise control; auxiliary headlights for working in low-light situations; and dual hydraulic pumps for big tractor performance and the ability to handle attachments with ease.

New in 2009 is the Ex450. Designed for those who have more to do and want to enjoy doing it, the Ex450 is built on a large chassis to accommodate a wide range of implements while offering more versatility and smooth handling. The largest of the group features a 45-hp direct injection diesel engine to deliver higher reserve torque for more useable horsepower. The Ex450 also features Syncho Shuttle technology for simple directional change, a 9×9 transmission giving the operator nine forward and nine reverse speeds, as well as a powerful lift capacity of more than 2,400 lbs.

Advice and Insights

“It’s important to understand the tasks you’ll need to complete, as well as features, ease of use and total cost of ownership of the product in order to find the right fit,” says Roger Gifford, Cub Cadet Yanmar compact product manager. “Ideally, the right product will be versatile in any operation and is an investment that can quickly pay for itself. That’s why it’s also important to demo the product before making a decision. By understanding your options and spending some time in the seat, you can feel confident knowing your compact tractor will be an indispensable tool for many years to come.”

Massey Ferguson Compact Tractors

Eight Generations of Tractor Technology Will Culminate in the MF 1600 Series

History

Massey Ferguson’s history of innovation and technological excellence began more than 160 years ago when Daniel Massey began what would become Massey Ferguson. He was joined in 1953 by Harry Ferguson who patented the three-point hitch, which allows tractor and implement to work as an integrated unit. In 1962, Massey Ferguson became the world’s best-selling tractor, and in 1978 the company introduced its first compact tractor, the MF205, a 20-hp model with optional four-wheel drive. This introduction came as Massey Ferguson made a commitment to meeting the needs of all consumers, from the contractor to the rural lifestyle customer.

Products

Since 1978, Massey has introduced seven series of compact tractors. Over time, the tractors have become more powerful and more substantial with larger frames, larger platforms and additional hydraulics to tackle more work. The eighth series, the MF 1600 Series, debuts in April 2009. The development of this series is part of AGCO Corp.’s record R&D efforts which exceeded $195 million in 2008.

The new MF 1600 Series builds upon the success of the popular MF 1500 Series. With the idea of making the most comfortable tractor in its class, the units have a noticeably larger operator’s area, form-hugging, spring-suspension seats, large armrests and a platform that rests on rubber isolation mounts to minimize vibration at the operator’s level. Right-hand fender-mounted controls reduce operator back and arm fatigue.

Available in six models ranging from 35 to 60 hp, the power under the hood of the MF 1600 Series is delivered by an efficient Iseki three- or four-cylinder, liquid-cooled diesel engine with clean-air technology that meets Tier IV interim emission standards. Four easy-as-driving-your-car transmission choices are available to match the customer’s needs for economy, durability, power and agility.

The Massey compact tractor lineup is unique in that all models are built with tough cast-iron chassis and heavy-duty drive trains — truly the features of a full-size tractor. Many models offer standard features that are optional on competitor’s tractors. And most importantly the four-wheel drive tractors feature a wide range of choices in transmission, horsepower and cab or platform models and are available with a broad selection of attachments.

Today, Massey Ferguson offers a complete line of equipment from zero-turn mowers to sub-compact, compact, utility, midrange, specialty and high horsepower tractors. Massey Ferguson offers the Hesston Series hay equipment to serve the needs of hobby farms up through professional hay producers, along with combine harvesters.

Across the country, the company is backed by an extensive network of dealers who have been in business for generations and offer full-service, repair and OEM parts.

Advice to Buyers

“You need a tractor and you deserve the right one,” says Steve Barcuch, product marketing manager for compact tractors. “Asking the right questions and providing the right information to the dealer will make it easier to select the right tractor to make your jobs more efficient and enjoyable. Consider these questions. What type of work will you do with the tractor? Who will be operating the tractor? How much time do you have to complete the jobs? Will you do maintenance and minor repairs yourself? How far away is your nearest dealer? What type of service is important to you? How much are you prepared to spend on a tractor and attachments?”
