The Rental Show 2008

Pack your bags. It’s time to head to Sin City, where the dice are rolling, slots are turning and rental is what’s in, as the American Rental Association (ARA) hosts its annual Rental Show, Feb. 11-14, at the Mandalay Bay Convention Center in Las Vegas.

The Rental Show is designed to help rental professionals discover new products, learn from rental-focused seminars and connect with other industry personnel.

Over 650 exhibitors will be present for the event that highlights the latest products in event and party, light construction and general tool and heavy construction rental. Visitors can experience products and equipment up close and talk to company professionals about their latest innovations.

For the fourth consecutive year, exhibit space for The Rental Show is sold out. With more overall floor space than the 2007 show in Atlanta, there will be plenty of room to explore the latest product offerings, chat with industry professionals and learn about rental. The heavy construction, light construction and general tool booths are located in the Bayside exhibit halls on the first level of the convention center.

Rental Instruction

Education is one of the core purposes of The Rental Show each year, and the 2008 lineup continues a strong tradition of valuable learning presented by rental veterans and expert speakers. The pre-show workshops and the seminars offered during the show will provide more than 70 total hours of education from which to choose. The show’s education is included with the full registration package. Seminars include topics such as asset management, employee relations and customer satisfaction.

Construction U, the ARA’s educational workshop designed specfically for construction and general tool rental business owners and managers, offers a 2008 program focused on management skills applicable to rental. The workshop is Feb. 10, just prior to The Rental Show. The program will include a full day of seminars that apply management principles to key operation areas such as financials, safety and risk, information technology, assets, sales and marketing and human resources.

Specific topics of Construction U include: understanding financial statements and tax strategies; interviewing, hiring and training the ideal employee; using ARA’s Cost of Doing Business Report; building a sales team; creating a safety-first workplace; protecting assets; a business health checkup; and understanding the latest rental technology. Seminars will be presented by financial, safety and sales professionals, as well as rental industry veterans. A session on protecting assets will feature law enforcement officers who have recovered millions of dollars worth of stolen equipment.

Giving Back

The live and silent auctions are returning this year, after a successful run in 2007. This year’s auctions will take place on Feb. 13 at the convention center and benefit the ARA Foundation. Ritchie Bros. Auctioneers are sponsoring the live auction for the second straight year. Fifty four of The Rental Show’s exhibitors donated new equipment for the auctions, with auction items representing all areas of the trade show floor— heavy construction, light construction, general tool and party and special event. Eleven of those companies donated multiple pieces of equipment to be auctioned as packages, while Allied Financial Services is offering special financing terms for the live auction items. Overall, the auction items range in value from $135 to nearly $18,000.

A reception will also be held in conjunction with the events and is sponsored by QUALCOMM. Funds from the inaugural auctions go to the foundation’s program, providing scholarships to technical school students; a total of 23 scholarships worth $37,000 are now being offered. In addition, the foundation is developing extra programs that fulfill its mission to create educational opportunities, build relationships and aid the rental industry.

JLG’s Latest Addition Provides Best-in-Class Lifting Capacity

Late last year, JLG Industries added the G5-18A super compact telehandler to its product line for use in the construction, landscape and agricultural markets. Its compact size and supreme maneuverability makes the machine versatile for use in a variety of projects and jobsites.

JLG created the G5-18A with operator comfort and machine maneuverability in mind, designing the machine with a 5,500- lb maximum lifting capacity and 1,850-lb capacity at the fully extended reach of 11 ft — the best capacity in the compact telehandler class, according to JLG. Three operator-selectablesteering modes come standard with the machine including fourwheel circle, four-wheel crab and two-wheel steering.

Brian Boeckman, JLG’s product parent for North American telehandlers, said, “We spent a great deal of time talking with construction, landscape and municipal professionals to ensure the G5-18A super compact telehandler was designed for top-ofthe- line operator comfort. We also paid close attention to service needs by making the engine area easily accessible with standard maintenance intervals of 500 hours, which is 100 percent longer than other compact telehandlers.”

The G5-18A can aid construction professionals in parking garage construction, multi-story applications and for distributing materials around large jobsites, adds Boeckman. Municipalities can benefit from the machine’s versatility and can use the G5-18A in a variety of tasks such as landscaping and snow removal.

The G5-18A’s 126-in. turning radius and compact dimensions (146 in. long by 71 in. wide by 77 in. high) make it the ideal machine for work in tight jobsites.

“One of the advantages of compact telehandlers over traditional pick-and-place machines is their small dimensions,” says Boeckman. “Those small dimensions when coupled with a tight turning radius allow operators to access locations on crowded jobsites that traditional handlers simply cannot.”

The gross vehicle weight of the G5-18A, less than 11,000 lbs, allows the machine to be lifted by crane to access most jobsites for use on higher-level doors.

There are several attachments available for the telehandler including a general purpose bucket, a light material bucket, a grapple bucket, various carriages and a crane hook. When equipped with these attachments, the G5-18A can be used in applications where other equipment was usually needed.

The G5-18A can even be configured to accommodate skid steer attachments. A special coupler that will accept universal skid steer attachments can be ordered with the machine. If the machine is equipped with a JLG coupler mechanism, an adapter can be purchased which will allow the use of skid steer attachments, says Boeckman.

General maintenance for the G5-18A includes periodic lubrication and general engine check-ups, such as oil and filter changes.

Rental Show visitors can stop by booth #6119 to see the G5-18A, as well as other JLG products. RS#60
