Star Trucks
It is a dark time for our heroes. Faced with difficult decisions buying a new work cruiser for their contracting forces, a team of researchers is sent to a not-so-distant destination called Atlanta.
A new hope is born at The Work Truck Show. Learning the latest skills and technologies from the best manufacturers, upfitters and OEM’s in the commercial truck industry, our old pros become new masters with a work truck equipped for every battle in the contracting business….
Occupying 400,000 sq ft of the Georgia World Congress Center, The Work Truck Show 2008 and 44th Annual National Truck Equipment Association (NTEA) Convention runs Feb. 26 to 28 in Atlanta, with the Convention and educational sessions starting Feb. 25.
“If you build, upfit, use or repair vocational trucks and trailers in any industry, The Work Truck Show 2008 is a must-attend event,” says Dennis Jones, NTEA convention chairman and vice president of sales and marketing for Auto Truck Group (Roanoke, Ind.). “At The Work Truck Show, you can see and compare the latest product and technology innovations from more than 500 companies all under one roof.”
If it can go on, in, under or over a truck, chances are it will be at The Work Truck Show. Produced annually by the NTEA, The Work Truck Show is North America’s largest work truck event. It brings together vocational truck fleet managers, truck buyers and maintenance personnel from the Class 1–8 market with hundreds of the manufacturers, distributors and dealers that produce the trucks and equipment critical to their work. In this single location, attendees can check out the latest full-size work trucks and equipment while examining individual vehicle components offered by more than 500 suppliers. Attendance at last year’s event topped 9,000, bettering previous high attendance figures.
There You Will Learn from the Masters Who Instructed Me
As mentioned above, educational meetings start on Feb. 25 with the special session “Surviving & Thriving: Trends Reshaping the Truck Equipment Industry.” Attendees will learn what’s changing in the commercial truck, trailer and equipment industry and how this evolution impacts their business.
This state of the industry presentation is one of three special sessions planned for truck equipment distributors and dealers on Feb. 25. The others are the “Hybrid Truck & Alternative Fuels Summit” and “Roll with the Changes: Simplifying Vehicle Certification & Labeling.” A separate ticket is required for each special session. All told, more than 40 industry-specific training sessions covering fleet management, business management, distributor-specific issues, technical topics, as well as techniques for increasing productivity, efficiency and profitability will be offered. Additional free mini-classes will be available in two training theaters on the show floor Feb. 26 and 27.
Also during show hours on Feb. 26 and 27, The Work Truck Show attendees can take the latest commercially viable hybrid vehicles for a test drive as part of the popular Hybrid Ride-and-Drive. There are currently 12 vehicles scheduled for the Ride-and-Drive, including an alternative fuel vehicle using a direct-injection liquid propane fuel system, a battery electric SUV, a series hydraulic hybrid-powered truck, a battery electric utility service truck, a light-duty battery electric truck with a 150-mile range, a battery electric hybrid package delivery van, a Class 6–7 battery electric hybrid truck and a plug-in hybrid electric utility vehicle. This year’s expanded course covers city streets to provide participants with a real-world proving ground. Participation is included with trade show registration and is available on a first-come, first-served basis.
Additional commercially viable hybrid and alternative fuel trucks and equipment, as well as electric and Telematics technologies, will be displayed in the Advanced Truck Technology Pavilion on the show floor for three days beginning Feb. 26. Visit the Pavilion for exhibits from hybrid truck manufacturers, chassis manufacturers, system integrators, electrical component suppliers, Telematics system integrators, hydraulic component suppliers, alternative fuel producers and related industry organizations.
The Hybrid Ride-and-Drive and Advanced Truck Technology Pavilion are sponsored by EATON Hybrid Power Systems.
On Feb. 27, three-time NASCAR Winston Cup champion Darrell Waltrip will deliver a keynote address at the President’s Breakfast and NTEA Annual Meeting.
On Feb. 28, the Business Forum will take place and Stan Slap, president of international consulting company Slap, will offer advice for creating unbeatable branding in any market.
You’ll Never Find a More Wonderful Hive of Manufacturers and End-Users
Some of the largest fleets in the country attend The Work Truck Show, and many booths are staffed with engineers and other technical personnel to help attendees spec’ vehicles and equipment.
“All of us in the work truck industry are in a unique position to work with one another to develop and apply the technologies that will literally drive us into the future,” says Jim Carney, NTEA executive director.

American Roll-Off
American Roll-off, manufacturer of Hook-All Hook Lifts, announces the introduction of its new High Dump Hook Lifts models. The new 25,000 and 30,000 lb capacity dual pivot units are designed for use on a 33,000 lb GVW chassis. Hook-all Hook Lifts increase the utilization of the vehicle since it takes less than 30 seconds to switch between bodies such as a dump body, salt spreader or flat bed. An added benefit of Hook Lift bodies is that they can be placed on the ground for easy loading and unloading. “The new Hook-All Hook Lift models HA-250 and HA-300 utilize dual lift cylinders and operate at 2,800 psi which makes it easy to match up to the end-users’ hydraulic accessories,” states Warren Kimble, VP of manufacturing.
