Oil Spill Creates Business for Some Rental Stores, Takes Away from Others
The negative effects of the Gulf oil spill have taken its toll on the construction industry as well. While some manufacturers are fighting the good fight against the oil and aiding in cleanup, it has created an imbalance in the rental industry.
Rental Pulse, a publication from the American Rental Association (ARA), is reporting mixed feelings in the rental industries. From heavy equipment to tents, tables and chairs, the cleanup process has brought in thousands of workers. While that means more demand, it also means that workers from immediately affected industries are flooding the market and everything is at a standstill.
As Ian Candies, owner, The Rent Zone, Raceland, La., explains, “Independent contractors are leaving the market to work on the Gulf. Off-shore guys aren’t working, so they aren’t spending money on home projects or rentals. We would ship out light towers or compressors or welding machines that would go offshore. Our industry here is based on oil. When the rest of the economy was in really bad shape, the smaller businesses here were doing all right. Now, it’s shut down.”
