New York Announces Geothermal Heat Pump System Incentives

This photo pictures a residential geothermal heat pump. The geothermal movement is crawling across the nation. Just recently the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) announced a program that will provide incentives for the installation of geothermal heat pump (GHP) systems in multifamily buildings. GHP systems can be used for space heating and cooling in residential buildings and excess heat from the system can be used to produce hot water. A typical GHP system includes an exterior ground loop, along with a heat pump and control system inside the building.

Proposals are due this Friday – February 11.

NYSERDA will provide incentives for the installation of GHP systems of $950 per ton of capacity for market rate buildings and $1,200 per ton of capacity for the installation of GHP systems in buildings that qualify as affordable housing.

Eligible Projects:
GHP incentives will target existing multifamily buildings with electric heating systems and central air conditioning in SBC/EEPS service territory. To receive financial incentives under the GHP Program, applicants are required to participate in the Multifamily Performance Program (MPP). The MPP will allow the applicant to identify a Partner who will assist the applicant in developing an Energy Reduction Plan which will identify cost-effective energy efficiency measures to install in the building. The Partner can assist in identifying contractors to design and install the GHP system.  Information regarding applying for the MPP is available at https://www.getenergysmart.org/MultiFamilyHomes/Default.aspx

Applicants that have already participated or are currently participating in MPP are eligible as well. Applications submitted will be chosen through a competitive process that will award funds after one due date. Additional due dates will be scheduled if necessary until funding has been exhausted.

Application Submission:
Applicants must submit six (6) paper copies of their proposal (one with an original signature) and one (1) electronic copy on a CD with all attachments. The paper copy must have a signed Appendix A verifying the parameters for the proposed GHP system.  Applications must be clearly labeled and submitted to:
