Bauma Report: Perkins Engines’ Tier 4 Readiness

Had another high-octane booth visit with Perkins Engines, and it should come as no surprise that the engine-manufacturing giant has its sights set on Tier 4 Interim readiness.

Perkins is exhibiting its full range of Tier 4 Interim / Stage IIIB compliant engines at this year’s Bauma. The range is designed to not only offer specific power outputs but also a choice of engine configurations and options that provide OEMs with the ability to design-in the engine into the application with the minimum of re-engineering.

Bauma is the first showing for Perkins’ new 850 Series compact, four-cylinder 3.4 liter engine. The 850 Series builds on Perkins’ strength and ability to tailor power solutions for individual customer needs. Significantly the new model will allow Perkins to offer customers greater power density and compactness to suit their precise requirements, whatever the application.

Offering more power and torque from a smaller package, customers will now be able to move seamlessly through the power bands as the 850 Series produces 60 up to 115 hp.

The 850 Series benefits from a common rail fuel injection system, smart waste-gated turbocharger and aftercooler, all regulated by full authority electronic controls to ensure world-class performance and fuel consumption.

In keeping with all Perkins’ Tier 4 Interim / Stage IIIB product range, the 850 Series has been developed using extensive “voice of the customer” research. To meet these requirements, the range features a strong emphasis on power density, fuel consumption and performance, giving OEMs choice and support if downsizing is desired.

The award winning 1200 Series forms a key part of Perkins’ new range of cleaner, compact diesel engines, and provides OEMs with a power span from 80 to 300hp. Below 175hp, a shorter stroke 1206E-E66TA is a 6.6 litre engine, which will be of interest particularly to those customers who require lots of torque at low engine speed. Both 1206 models utilize a diesel oxidation catalyst (DOC) and diesel particulate filter (DPF) to ensure compliance with the forthcoming regulations on particulate emissions.

Lower down the scale the new 1204 model replaces the popular current 1104 engine. The 4.4 liter, four-cylinder engine is offered in a choice of two versions; the turbo, intercooled version – the 1204E-E44TA – produces 110kW, and uses a single turbocharger and is intercooled, providing improved fuel economy while offering greater power and torque; the twin turbo, after-cooled model – the 1204E-E44TTA – is rated at 130kW and employs a two-stage turbocharger, like the 7 liter engine, for extra power density and faster response.

All 1200 Series engines for Tier 4 Interim/Stage IIIB make use of Perkins’ NOx Reduction System (NRS), with field trials indicating significant improvements in fuel consumption and sound quality over existing Tier 3 models.
